File Boxes of Delicious Things to Eat

Didn't your mom and grandma each have one? Mine did. Their recipe card file boxes were a fixture on the kitchen counter.

Spatters of batter on the outside, dog-eared index cards in the inside, the recipe file box was an often used tool in the day-to-day cooking of my childhood home. I fondly remember recipes for no bake cookies, fruit cake, party punch, and meatloaf.

Those treasured recipes of home cooking were housed in boring, greenish-gray, metal boxes that had as much personality as a tin-can. That plain Jane recipe card box doesn't suit today's modern kitchens, full of time-saving appliances and stylish decor. Here are some attractive recipe card file boxes pretty enough to sit on a kitchen counter.

Classic and Practical Recipe Card Box

I remember pulling out favorite cookie recipes from my mom's recipe card box to give her hints about the treats or meals I wanted prepared.

This recipe file box would've been perfect. It's made in a classic wood finish. The top doubles as a stand for the recipe card you are using.

Modern Twist on Recipe Card Boxes

In the digital age, are recipe card file boxes still needed? Absolutely.

A box full of favorite recipes makes a great gift for a new bride or a teen heading off to college.

Frequently used recipes that are still not committed to memory are perfect for a recipe card file box.

Even online recipe sites, such as Allrecipes.com, give you an option for printing a 3" x 5" card or a 4" x 6" card format. Those cards will fit perfectly into any of the recipe card boxes on this page.

For crafty cooks, recipe cards can be personalized with favorite graphics and even scrapbooking layouts.

Other Uses for Card Files

Besides holding recipes, these beautiful and unique recipe card boxes can be used for general organization. Store photographs, mementos, business cards, postcards, receipts, keys, or cosmetics.

Card files are great for the school room too. Use them for flashcards, playing cards, index card timelines, math manipulatives, and craft materials.

I still have the recipe box and vintage cards that I got as a newly wed! These new ones are really nice.

A lot more attractive than that plastic ugh my mom's were in. And she wasn't a great cook, but her recipe box was in high demand after she died. Everyone wanted _something_ out of it.

Those of us who love cooking make it our goal to fill our recipe card box with as many recipes as we can. Whether or not they are passed down through the family, made by ourselves, or just out of a book, good food is good food! And a neat looking recipe card box can really add to the kitchen.

I also still have my vintage recipe card box that I still use from time to time.

My sister had a recipe book made for my mother last year that incorporated family photos and vintage recipe cards - it was pretty cool.
